An abdominal aortic aneurysm can be a life-threatening condition that is caused by an enlarged lower segment of the aorta, one of the major vessels that supplies the body with blood and oxygen. The aorta runs through the center of the chest to the lower extremities. These abnormalities can form slowly over time, which can make them difficult to detect. Ruptured or hemorrhaging aneurysms can occur and lead to sudden symptoms that require immediate medical attention.
This condition can be contributed to the weakening of artery walls, which may result from high blood pressure, physical trauma, blood vessel diseases like deep vein thrombosis and atherosclerosis, and certain kinds of infections. Risk factors for abdominal aortic aneurysm include age, race, tobacco use, vasculitis, and family history of blood vessel diseases. Caucasian males over the age of 65 are at greater risk for developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Symptoms can include unrelenting abdominal pain, excessive sweating, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, and noticeable pulsating sensations in the lower abdomen.
Pictured below, this 64-year-old male arrived for CT scans related to prostate problems. The imaging scans revealed incidental findings unrelated to the prostate, an expanding abdominal aortic aneurysm that measured at 6.9cm. Luckily, the aneurysm had not ruptured and was able to be surgically cleared via endograft. The patient returned home in 2 days with a significantly improved outlook.
